Menopause and Your Skin
Your skin performs some really important functions. It helps you regulate your temperature, protects you from all sorts of nasties trying to get into your body and helps keep your internal bits safe from injury, but as we age and our hormone levels drop, it undergoes some significant changes.
It loses hydration, it loses collagen (around 30% in the first 5 years after menopause) and elastin (the scaffolding that helps keep it firm and smooth) and as a result, fine lines and wrinkles appear, and it can become more sensitive, drier and itchier. For people with rosacea, they can see more flare ups. But, around perimenopausal some people find they get more outbreaks and oily skin returns due to the fluctuating hormones.
